Kadir Has University
It was founded in 1997 by the late Turkish industrialist and philanthropist Kadir Has.
Kadir Has University, or as students prefer to call it KHAS, is an institutional university at Fatih – Istanbul. It’s a research university aiming to create high-quality research in addition to students with competencies of the highest standards by developing a new educational model based on applications and projects. Professor Dr. M. Sundan Dorokanoglu Fayez is the current head of the university.
It has six faculties: the Faculty of Economics and Administrative and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, the Faculty of Law, and the Faculty of Management.
The university’s research institutes also include the Center for Energy and Sustainable Development, Istanbul’s Studies Center, Sports Studies Research Center, Gender and Women Studies Center, International and European Studies Center, and the Center for Cyber Security and Critical Infrastructure Protection. The university consists of seven faculties which are the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, the Faculty of Economics, Administration and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Mass Communication, the Faculty of Art and Design, and the Faculty of Applied Sciences, in addition to many vocational schools and graduate schools to become a leader in the educational and cultural fields in the Republic of Turkey, in addition to preparing itself to become a global center in the areas of scientific research development.

Campus:
The campus is located near the golden horn in Sebali, Fatih, Istanbul’s capital district, on the European side of the city. The building was originally a tobacco factory, erected by the Istanbul-based-Armenian-Ottoman architect Hovsip Aznavour in 1884.
The factory was used for almost 70 years by TEKEL, state tobacco producers. Then, it fell into disrepair due to the lack of maintenance and was eventually abandoned. It wasn’t until the late 1990s when the Kadir Has foundation came up with the idea to convert this abandoned factory building into a university, following a twenty-nine-year lease from TEKEL in 1997. After four years of restoration, the university was officially inaugurated on the 30th of December 2002. The building also contains more than 35,000 m2 of interior space in addition to land.
The Cibali Campus is also home to the Rezan Has Museum, named after Kadir Has’s wife. Furthermore, the museum features an 11th-century cistern, one of the few Byzantine buildings outside the old city walls, as well as the ruins of a bath from the Ottoman era.
KHAS's new education model:
The new model is built upon a foundational program designed for all first-year students and an education model based on the projects that start in the second year. This model doesn’t include any traditional courses, and all academic and professional competencies are delivered to students through projects developed in collaboration with prominent business partners in each sector.
The core program provides a compound academic curriculum for new students at KHAS before they begin their departmental courses. The curriculum is focused on the belief that the university should foster creative inquiry in students to prepare them for rapid changes and new challenges in their specific fields and society as a whole.
After the core program, starting from the second year, the project-based education model is implemented where:
- The curriculum is prepared in collaboration with leading sector representatives.
- Theoretical and practical skills, project development, and application processes are included.
- Each student is provided with an academic and sector advisor.
Student exchange programs:
Kadir Has owns the Erasmus program and exchanges partnerships with many different universities throughout Europe and the world. The university has 209 agreements with 189 universities in 51 different countries.
Student life at KHAS:
With 40 student clubs and 17 sports teams, Kadir Has University offers a wide range of social, cultural, and sports activities for all students.
There are six faculties in the university:

- Management faculty.
- Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences.
- Faculty of Art and Design.
These Faculties offer 23 undergraduate programs, 14 Ph.D. programs, and 46 graduate programs.
