Girne American University
GAU was founded in 1985 and has developed itself since its initiation with merely 7 students.
It has reached 20,000 Students. As a strong university after 33 years since its inception, GAU has maintained close contractual relationships with universities in North America and Europe. GAU was one of the first universities in Cyprus to be recognized by the YOK (Turkish Higher Education Board).
This was followed by recognition from YODAK (Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Higher Education Council). These required national accreditations followed by several program accreditations and international recognitions.
About the university:
In 1995 GAU began expanding into the international higher education sector. Since then, educational partnerships have been getting developed in India, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, the USA, the UK, the Czech Republic, Hong Kong, and Moldova.
These partnerships include student and educational staff exchanges and an opportunity for students to experience different cultures and educational experiences.
As GAU heads towards its fiftieth year, over the course of its 33 years of development, the administration, educational crew, and staff of the University have balanced the demands of growth, with the need for high levels of quality, both in teaching and overall experience of each student.
Throughout its 33-year history, GAU has strived to improve its use of the latest technology and teaching methods. While we have one of the highest Ph.D.-to-student ratios, we also have the highest computer-to-student ratio. Over the past five years, the GAU Library has been at the forefront of the revolution in library science and the implementation of digital library resources. Many classes now include PowerPoint presentations and downloadable MP4 versions of the lectures.
Moreover, the entire campus and all residences have Wi-Fi throughout. GAU Television and Radio also broadcast selected lectures and seminars for students and educational staff.

Besides student-oriented education, GAU organizes activities that will improve the social and cultural aspects of students. Seminars, conferences, and symposiums in the scope of more than 1000 activities are held by experts in their fields to support studies every academic year.
Sports and social activities:
Multicultural Center (MCC): It is a multidimensional platform that operates under the prestigious flag of Girne American University. Since GAU is proud of having students from 95 countries, this platform has been exclusively created for international students, where a comprehensive blend of many cultures can be brought together. The Multicultural Center provides equal opportunities to all its members to share, implement and celebrate their creative ideas, traditional customs, and national celebrations, which makes them feel at home. While giving the students a clear path to think outside the box and present their ideas, it creates a very healthy education for all, on one hand, and cultivates a very diverse mix of ethnicities from all over the world, on the other hand.
There are a total of 20 sports clubs available for you to join. If you would like to join a club, contact the sports coordinators at their office in the sports office behind the health center. GAU also has sports teams for major sports representing the university. Lastly, newcomers have a good chance of being elected to one of these teams by actively participating in sports and tournaments.
Healthcare:
- Girne American University’s Medical Center has been providing services since the spring of 2006. It is active for GAU students and staff as well as Girne American Nursery, elementary schools, faculties, and employees. Services include first aid, simple dose medications, blood pressure, body temperature, and glucose checks.
- In addition, injections and removal or addition of stitches are also part of the services provided. In case of emergency, patients are referred to Dr. Akçiçek and accompanied by nurses.
